Preparing TIFF and BMP images for the web with Skavio File Toolbox
Skavio File Toolbox accepts TIF, TIFF and BMP images and supports JPG, PNG and WebP exports. But the reason to convert differs: TIFF raises a browser-compatibility question, while BMP often raises a file-size question. A useful web export starts by separating those problems—and ends with checking the actual result.
TIFF and BMP present different publishing problems
TIFF is not a broadly supported inline web-image format. MDN documents native support in Safari rather than across the major browsers, so a TIFF that opens successfully on one computer is not evidence that it will display for every website visitor. BMP already has broad browser support. Its common uncompressed representation, however, can produce large files. Converting a BMP is therefore often a delivery-efficiency choice, not a requirement to make the image display at all. For either source, choose an output accepted by the destination website or content management system. Skavio File Toolbox supports both source formats, but format support alone does not establish how every TIFF or BMP variant will be handled.
Choose JPG, PNG or WebP by the content
The source extension does not determine the most suitable export. A photograph and a scanned page with small type may both arrive as TIFF files, yet have different publishing requirements.
- JPG: a practical option for photographs when lossy compression is acceptable. JPEG has no alpha channel, and compression can damage sharp text or diagram edges. Inspect those details before publishing.
- PNG: a useful candidate for text-heavy scans, diagrams and transparent graphics. The format specifies lossless compression and optional transparency, but that does not guarantee preservation of every property from the source.
- WebP: an option to evaluate for web delivery, with major-browser support and format-level support for lossy compression, lossless compression and transparency. Compare the actual export rather than assuming it will be smaller or use a particular compression mode.
Review the export where it will actually appear
Keep the original TIFF or BMP and treat the converted image as a publishing copy. Open the output in the intended browser or CMS, then inspect both the image itself and its appearance at the intended display size. TIFF requires an additional completeness check: a single file can contain multiple images. Multi-page TIFF handling, output count and packaging have not been verified for File Toolbox. Do not assume one exported image represents the entire source.
- Check dimensions, orientation and whether all expected content is present.
- Inspect small text, fine lines and high-contrast edges for lost detail or visible artifacts.
- Compare colors and any transparent areas against the original; color-profile, metadata and transparency preservation have not been verified.
- Measure the downloaded file size and confirm that the destination accepts it. Conversion alone does not establish a size reduction.
- For a multi-image TIFF, verify every required page or image before treating the export as complete.
Browser access does not mean on-device processing
Skavio File Toolbox is accessed through a browser, but standard conversions run on Skavio infrastructure—not on the user's device. Normal conversion processing does not require a paid AI API. Under canonical Pricing V2, image-file work is metered at 2 credits per started 25 MB per source, with a 2-credit minimum. It uses the shared company wallet across Skavio web processing tools and the Processing API. This describes the processing rate, not a promise about conversion speed, output quality or resulting file size.
