Skavio File Toolbox: choose the right output for a video recording

Skavio File Toolbox converts MP4, MKV, WEBM, MOV, AVI and M4V recordings into MP4, WEBM or MKV video, or an MP3 audio-only deliverable. For a training recording or interview handoff, start with the receiving workflow: does it need video in a specified format, or just the sound?

Match the output to the handoff

A conversion should serve a defined destination. Ask what the recipient’s application or publishing system accepts before choosing an output. File Toolbox’s listed video outputs are MP4, WEBM and MKV; its only listed direct audio output from video is MP3. These illustrative handoffs show how that choice works. They describe possible workflows, not customer results:

A supported extension is not a playback guarantee

A media container packages tracks; codecs encode the contents of those tracks. The distinction matters because a receiving browser or application must support both the container and the codecs inside it. An MP4 extension alone does not establish that a file will play in every destination. Skavio’s supported format list does not specify every production codec profile or encoding setting. It also does not establish support for every embedded codec, damaged file or protected recording. Test the converted result in the application where it will actually be used. Changing formats does not guarantee a smaller file or unchanged quality: encoded video size and quality depend on the source and codec configuration. MP3 uses lossy compression, so treat an audio-only export as a listening or sharing deliverable—not a lossless archival copy.

Plan by recording length, not just file size

File Toolbox is accessed on the web, but standard conversions run on Skavio infrastructure rather than entirely inside the user’s browser. Normal conversion processing does not require a paid AI API. Under Pricing V2, media processing uses 4 shared credits per started minute, with a minimum of 4 credits. A 61-second recording therefore spans two started minutes: 8 credits. This is the media rate, not the separate file-size or PDF-page rate used for other file work. Skavio’s web processing tools and API use the same company wallet. File Toolbox has a two-hour media maximum and a total source-upload limit of 500 MB. Check both duration and upload size before preparing a job; a recording can meet one limit while exceeding the other.

Review the result before sending it on

Keep the source recording and inspect the converted deliverable before sharing it. The final check should happen in the intended destination, not only in whichever player happens to be available locally. Do not assume that subtitles, additional audio tracks, chapters or metadata will be preserved; their handling is not verified in the product scope. File Toolbox conversion is also separate from transcription, caption generation, translation and social-clip creation.
