HEIC, HEIF and AVIF: convert for the workflow that comes next
Skavio File Toolbox accepts HEIC, HEIF and AVIF images and converts them to JPG, PNG, WebP or PDF through its web tool. The practical benefit is format compatibility: preparing a photo for an upload form, an image for a website or a visual attachment for a document handoff. Start with what the receiving application needs, rather than converting every image by default.
Let the destination set the requirement
Before converting an image, check the recipient’s supported file types and any requirements for dimensions or file size. If the original already works, conversion may be unnecessary. Apple documents exporting HEIF images to JPEG or PNG using Photos or Preview on Mac when another format is needed. Consider three illustrative handoffs: a phone photo submitted to a form that requires JPG; an AVIF asset prepared for a publishing workflow that accepts WebP; or a HEIF image delivered as a PDF attachment because the recipient wants a document. Each starts with a specific destination requirement—not a claim that one format is universally better.
Choose an output for its trade-offs
The four supported outputs serve different purposes. Their format capabilities help guide the choice, but they do not establish which encoding settings Skavio uses or which source features survive a particular conversion.
- JPG: a common choice for photographic handoffs when the recipient accepts JPEG. It uses lossy compression and does not support transparency, so do not assume the result will be identical to the source.
- PNG: worth considering when the destination needs a format that supports transparency and lossless encoding. Lossless PNG compression does not make the entire conversion lossless; earlier transformations can still discard information.
- WebP: an option for compatible web-publishing workflows. The format supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency, but that is not a promise of a particular Skavio setting or a smaller output file.
- PDF: choose it when the recipient wants a document attachment rather than a standalone image. Image-to-PDF support does not establish searchable text, OCR, editable text or archival compliance.
Convert on the web, with a clear processing basis
Use Skavio File Toolbox with a supported HEIC, HEIF or AVIF source and the required JPG, PNG, WebP or PDF output. Keep the original separately so you can compare the result or prepare another version later. Standard conversions run on Skavio infrastructure; normal conversion does not require a paid AI API. Access through a browser should not be confused with processing entirely inside that browser. Under canonical Pricing V2, file work costs 2 credits per started 25 MB or per started 10 PDF pages, using the larger basis per source, with a 2-credit minimum. File Toolbox and the other Skavio web processing tools share the company wallet with the Processing API.
Inspect the result where it will actually be used
A new extension is not the final acceptance test. Open the converted file, compare it with the original and test it in the receiving application. For a PDF handoff, check that the image is readable at the size the recipient will use. These are practical review steps, not promises about conversion fidelity. If color fidelity or metadata matters to the handoff, verify it separately. In particular, changing formats is not proof that location metadata has been removed.
- Check orientation and dimensions against the original.
- Inspect color, transparency where relevant, and fine details or text.
- Confirm that the destination accepts the output format and file size.
- Retain the source until the handoff has been checked.
